Auntie
and the Giant Nieces
Once upon
a time there lived two little nieces.
The girls were sweet.
Auntie loved them to pieces!
First they were babies,
then toddlers,
then young ladies!
The girls visited Auntie every few weeks,
traveling down the highways,
and on through the streets.
Auntie said, “Every time I see you, you’ve grown more and more!
The next time you visit, will you fit through the door?”
“What happened to my baby nieces?”
We’re not babies!
We’re BIG girls
and someday we’ll be GIANTS!” they boasted.
Were the nieces getting taller and taller?
Or, was Auntie getting smaller and smaller?
The girls grew strong and tall and played on the basketball
court,
but Auntie couldn’t play ‘cause she was so short!
Auntie didn’t know what to do!
Should she climb up on a ladder,
or wear high heeled shoes?
Should she grow a long neck
like the giraffe at the zoo?
Should she climb a tall mountain and look down from the top,
or fly high in a plane until their growing stopped?
Should she sit on a rainbow
and call down from below,
Where are my little nieces?
I really miss them so!”
She dreamt of their voices
as she napped in her hammock.
They woke her by saying,
“Auntie, don’t panic!”
“We like to hear your stories!
Didn’t you know?
We’re still your little nieces
with lots of room to grow!”
