I Nearly Missed the Sunset
I nearly missed the sunset tonight.
I nearly missed the departure of the last sun kissed clouds for the day
By assuming the puffy gray clouds that rolled in with the late afternoon fog
Would obscure any possibility of a colorful end to the day.
I prepared to close the curtains.
Yet just as the gray clouds submerged into a deeper charcoal colored horizon
Brilliant salmon streaks reached out from underneath the dark side of the fog bank,
Reflecting the last moments of glorious rays, as the crimson sun set along the coast.
Had the afternoon ended with a bright, clear blue sky,
The sunset would have been flat and uneventful
Without any clouds to reflect God’s final sensuous gift of the day.
Such it is with life.
A dull and mundane day can end with a brief, unexpected glimmer of light
Surprising us with moments of joy, even through the fog bank of despair.
