Freedom
The hawk
calls out from atop the towering Eucalyptus,
Observing the canyon from its vantage that others cannot reach.
Unlike the flocks of sparrows or chattering jays,
Unlike the covey of quail, or the woodpecker’s tumult,
The hawk flies high and far throughout the canyons
Free from the cacophony below.
Like the cougar, the hawk lives in solitude, but is not lonely.
